Great Dog Almighty - Tonight @ Ars Nova
My first musical collaboration will be performed for the first time tonight as part of the Ars Nova Ant Fest 2010. I wrote about the process briefly on the youngblog.
It’s been a lot of fun. I’d wake up, have my cup of coffee, write some lyrics and e-mail them off to Nate. By late afternoon, it would be a song. We’d bring in John Bennett—and then later folks like Sarah...

Another free reading of SFF. This one is part of EST’s Octoberfest. RJ Tolan to direct. An excellent cast is still being finalized…much like the script.

Cry on Cue at Capital Fringe
Cry on Cue is one of the first things I ever wrote. It’s a ten-minute piece about a female photographer that has to take pictures of her ex-boyfriend crying as part of a commission. It was a lot of fun to write, something I really enjoyed working on….and then basically I forgot about it.
Well, now it’s back DC Fringe-style featuring Amal Saade in a show called Equilibrium. Show...

Craftsmanship: Pizza and Plays
This article from NY Mag is from last June, but I think of it still. It’s about one man’s quest to make the perfect pizza. His dedication to craftsmanship, process, and care really struck me. If only I could care for my plays the way he cares for his pies…the carefully selected ingredients, traveling the world to find the right oven, the focus and shape of each individual pie,...

Sloan Brunch Sunday
Science. Pancakes. Plays. For the third year, in association with the EST/Sloan Project’s FIRST LIGHT FESTIVAL, the Youngblood playwrights merrily push past their complete ignorance of science to ponder the really big questions:
Can science get us laid?
Can science create an ice cream that tastes like a bagel?
When you’re dumped by a scientist is it different from the ...
On Repeated Viewings
God of Carnage, the best play of 2009 according to the Tony Awards, is finally scheduled to close in June. Once the hottest ticket in town, GOC is now on TDF just about every week. Sure, the stellar cast is gone…but Dylan Baker and Lucy Liu are pretty awesome on their own accord. What’s the problem?
Well, everyone has seen it. Time to close.
To tell you the truth, while I enjoyed the...

a touch of the poet
His Wife, by Andrew Hudgins
-
My wife is not afraid of dirt. She spends each morning gardening, stooped over, watering, pulling weeds, removing insects from her plants and pinching them until they burst. She won’t grow marigolds or hollyhocks, just onions, eggplants, peppers, peas – things we can eat. And while she sweats I’m working on my poetry and flute. Then growing...

Opening Day
A little secret about myself: I played baseball in high school.
Few know or remember this. My teammates of the old ‘03 Blues probably don’t even remember, but I was on the team and I even scored a run when we played a middle school in South Carolina. Oh, What a glorious day that was! I think of it still.
Despite my athleticism, for some reason I’ve never been a fan of...

Short Drama - Cold Stone
Night.
COLD STONE: You’ve worked hard today, Patrick. Come have a bite.
PATRICK: Oh, I couldn’t.
CS: C’mon. Sure you could!
P: Really.
CS: Look, there’s no line! You’ll be in and out ever so quickly.
P: I did want something tasty…
CS: I know.
P: And I did want something sweet…
CS: I know.
P: Ugh! Choices. So hard to make!
CS: Please. Don’t...

I’d be very happy living in this.

“On this day in 1867, the United States agreed to purchase Alaska from Russia for the sum of $7.2 million dollars. It had belonged to Russia for about 125 years, since Russians had been the first European explorers to get to the place and had proclaimed it their territory in 1741. The American…

If you were me
If you were me at this very moment, this is what you would be doing - You’d be near a window listening to city rain. You’d be wearing pajama pants your mother made with a white t-shirt belonging to either you, your girlfriend, or any member of either family. You’d be under a deadline for an article due in less than 24, so you’d also be pacing about your apartment eating...

Bedside Books - David Mamet Edition
I’m currently reading Mr. Mamet’s new(ish) book “on the Nature, Purpose, and Practice of the Movie Business.”
I have this to say about Mamet and his non-dramatic writing style: his true strength as a writer is in making you feel smart. Read his books and—provided you stay awake—you’ll feel like you’re intellectually sacrosanct. He’ll stroke...
Stories of O: Reason #31,084 why I love New York →
I was walking home from yoga along 23rd Street this afternoon and I noticed an older woman ahead of me with a seeing eye dog. She was stopped on the sidewalk by the street because her seeing eye dog had just taken a poo (to put it nicely). The woman was stooped over groping around on the sidewalk…
