A little secret about myself: I played baseball in high school.
Few know or remember this. My teammates of the old ‘03 Blues probably don’t even remember, but I was on the team and I even scored a run when we played a middle school in South Carolina. Oh, What a glorious day that was! I think of it still.
Despite my athleticism, for some reason I’ve never been a fan of professional baseball. The season too endless, the games too frequent, the action so very, very slow. But that’s going to change this year. This year, I’m going to be a fan.
The last time I followed baseball was in the early 90s when I lived in Amherst, MA. There were very few Red Sox fans at the time. I actually only remember one kid who fiercely defended the team. Wade Boggs had just moved on to the Yankees. Mo Vaughn was the only player whose card I wanted in my collection…we weren’t as good as the Blue Jays, slightly better than the Tigers…and then there was a strike, for what seemed like several years.
I think it was during this baseball strike that I started doing plays.
Anyway, time passed, and I feel like picking up where I left off. I realize the Red Sox have much more swagger in their step than they did back in ‘93, but I want to make it clear that I’m not jumping on any band-wagon, I’m simply reconnecting with the only team I’ve ever had any slight association with.
This year I’m a kid again. Go Sox. Play ball.
