God of Carnage, the best play of 2009 according to the Tony Awards, is finally scheduled to close in June. Once the hottest ticket in town, GOC is now on TDF just about every week. Sure, the stellar cast is gone…but Dylan Baker and Lucy Liu are pretty awesome on their own accord. What’s the problem?

Well, everyone has seen it. Time to close.

To tell you the truth, while I enjoyed the show, I don’t think I’d see it again. With the possible exception of CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION, after I’ve seen a play once I don’t really have any desire to see it again.

I find this with some movies, too. I liked The Departed, had a great time, but would I want to sit through it again? Nah, not really. Same for The Godfather or Braveheart or even Hurt Locker. I’ve seen it….I’m good.

However, I could watch Devil Wears Prada all day long…and I don’t even like that movie. I’d be happy to watch The Firm at any hour, same for Con-Air and Michael Clayton. It makes no difference to me that I’ve seen every single episode of Seinfeld, Mad Men, or West Wing…I’d happily watch any of them all over again (eh, I could skip a few episodes of Mad Men season three….)

Point is, why is that? Why am I happy to watch Old School endlessly, but don’t want to see God of Carnage again?

What’s that special ingredient that makes some movies really good once and other movies that, even if they’re not great, we’d see again?
